Leadership

Leadership
Now I work in a road consultant and design company, there is a new head of supervisor apartment, he is a men in his fifty years, he always came early and go late, and asking his followers to be like him, he is a civil engineer, and he had an experience in building construction but he didn’t have an experience in highways and road construction, the problem is that people didn’t like him at all, they are better in road engineering than him, but he try to show them what to do in their work, this position is very good for him because the salary is good, and because it is very close to his home, but for his followers it isn’t ,maybe he is good in communication but for me I prefer an expert boss in technical matter much more than anything else, because if I had a problem in road designing then he can help me.
I think a boss should think how to benefit and really help his followers more than just controlling them.

Road designer duty

Studies show that many accidents in road happened and kill many people and make others paralysis because of its geometric characteristics, this is the truth and for that road designer including myself should make more effort to come with the best design that we can give. Then the road constructor, controller and who make maintenance too should do their best for safer roads.
Yes it is very difficult to apply every condition in norms and standard, because of one obstacle or another, but the civil engineer should remember that there are many solutions and he has to find the most appropriate one.

Fondations in buildings is like a roots in a tree

The more the tree is high and big the more it has bigger and deeper roots; we can say the same thing in buildings, beside the nature of soil , water conditions and the shape of our building we need to know the seismic zone to be able to define what kind of foundation we have to use.
There are two roles for the foundation
-          Transmits the dead loud and the live loads to the soil
-          Anchor the superstructure
In big project and risky places it is recommended to have a geotechnical engineer to determine the size of the optimal foundation.

Civil engineering studding plan for students

If you choose to be a civil engineer for the future, then in general you have a good score in math and physics, and you have to be ready for more of them especially in your first two years in civil engineering studding.
Civil engineering is the oldest and the vastest engineering field, and for me as a public works engineer I find it very exiting major, you will learn a lot of good thing as a civil engineer like designing, team work, organization, planning, leadership, communication……. Beside you can and you have to choose what kind of civil engineer you will be, you need to know many things about all aspects of civil engineering, but believe me you can’t be a professional in everything, it is good if you determine in your last year as a civil engineering student what specialty you will concentrate in, like structural engineering, transportation engineering , geotechnical engineering………

Road design plan for civil engineer

The very first thing to do is to read the contract of design project between your company and the owner organization (stakeholders),  you will find the outputs they need from you as road designer, if you find something not clear in the contract then you need to ask them what they need exactly.
The second task is to visit the site with the stakeholders for more details about the project and to choose with them where the possibly corridor is.
The third is to start gathering data like traffic, hydrologic, environmental, geologic, geotechnical and of course the topographical data.
The fourth thing to do is to start the design and separate the work for the team design members

Road design software plan (AutoCAD Civil 3D, Dynamite VSP and 3 Ds Max)

If you are a transportation engineer, you need to use one of that software of road design, the most of them are integrated with AutoCAD, and for the rest, in general you need to convert the output plan (scheme) to an AutoCAD format to print it.
For me I already use lot of software including Civil 3D, Covadis, Piste and Polaris.  Every software has its prosperities, but for me I find Autodesk Civil 3D the most powerful and easy of use with a clear disadvantage that it need powerful computer to run it properly.
I am using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 and I think the most powerful option in this software is that you can change your design(Alignments, curves ….) even if you are in the end stages of your road design without need to repeat any of the previous work.
Beside the interface of the software is very helpful and smart (integrated with AutoCAD) and you can find all the commands on front of you.
If you want to make a professional visualization for your road, Autodesk make it very easy with Autodesk Dynamite VSP or Autodesk Civil Visualization Extension for Autodesk 3 DS Max, this software Extension make thing very easy for a civil engineer to use 3 Ds Max for his project visualization. All you need is to export your Civil 3D work with Autodesk Dynamite VSP Exporter for AutoCAD Civil 3D than import it with Civil Visualization Extension and make your road simulation.
Download Civil Visualization Extension if you already subscribe to Autodesk products.

The new civil engineering requirements

The new civil engineering requirements
More people mean more facilities has to build, and more safety requirements beside the evolution of science gives us more technique and methods to build better constructions with less money and less time, Because of that civil engineering become more complicated and very vast field, needs from us to be always updated and ready for the new challenges.
There are many specialties within civil engineering and that maybe because it is the oldest types of engineering (Egypt pyramids for example).
Beside the civil engineer can hold many jobs and position in the community according to his experience or specialty (city engineer, design, research, teaching……).
It is for sure the world will need more good civil engineers because more building and infrastructure need to built or fix.
The influence of computer calculation and software is very considerable in civil engineering, and for sure it make it more easier for civil engineer to do there calculation in less time, less efforts and more accurate, and in these day I think there is no good engineer who didn’t know how to use AutoCAD, Word and Excel for example.
Some good software in civil engineering:
Plaxis, Geo-slop: geotechnical engineering
Sap2000, Robot: structural engineering
Ms Project, Primavera: Construction, project management
Autodesk civil 3D, Autopiste: transportation engineering
In general the most civil engineers are analytical (designers), organized (they have to finish the project in the time), creative, curious, detail-oriented and sociable (they have to work in a team), and many civil engineers has the leadership ability.

In this blog (civilengineering-plan.blogspot.com) I will write about all aspects and subjects, as I can, relate to the civil engineering in two languages English and French, and this is some of the contents:
